What Is Lipitor ?

Lipitor, known generically as atorvastatin (a Statin), is an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor.

Lipitor Is Used To... .Treat primary hypercholesterolemia in those at risk for coronary artery disease. .Stop hardening of the arteries, to prevent you from heart attacks, peripheral vascular disease and stroke.

Lipitor limits and stops an enzyme used by the liver in cholesterol synthesis. This lowers the amount of cholesterol produced in the body, including the LDL cholesterol.

How Does It Work?

Lipitor reduces the amounts of • LDL cholesterol (bad for your body). • An enzyme used by the liver in cholesterol synthesis. • Apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to produce cholesterol). • Triglycerides (a type of fat).

And increases the level of HDL cholesterol (good for your body) in your blood.It limits and stops hardening of the arteries, to prevent you from heart attacks, vascular disease and stroke.

Use Lipitor When... You have not taken any of the following medicines : --An antifungal medication --Clarithromycin or cyclosporine --Fenofibrate --Cholestyramine or colestipol --Niacin

Possible Side Effects

Very rare cases of muscle problems and liver problems have been associated with the use of Lipitor and other similar medicines. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Lipitor and contact your doctor immediately: Pale colored urine Difficult breathing Allergic reaction
